Preliminaries
At the beginning of June 2018 the #Ingress faction of the Resistance built an undoubtedly beautiful starburst with 799 spikes in the south of Cologne: https://plus.google.com/u/0/+ReimarBauer/posts/6uwC4K69cFT
But what's the point of a Christmas star without a tree underneath? As nice as we Enlightened agents are, we wanted to deliver the missing green. The best Christmas firs of the region are known to be found in the Eifel. Probably because of the good volcanic soil. So the green triangle should also be built from this corner.
Agent xSOYLENTxGREENx set the ball rolling. Our multilayer field expert doppeIkeks refined the first draw to an official link plan. Matching the location of the Christmas tree, elves...err...agents from the region were recruited.
The keys were exchanged in the geographical center of the 3 anchors. However, the location was not only selected by geographical reasons, but also culinarily. We sat together with tasty burgers and steaks while resistance agents were building fields outside. How could they have guessed what "values" the capsules contained that appeared and disappeared in the scanner shortly after they passed by?
OP-Day:
With moderate precleaning everything was prepared on the field. Parts of the anchors in the north lay in the middle of the Cologne-Rodenkirchen Forest Botanical Garden. This garden is fenced and is locked at 8 pm by a security service. Only the following day at 9 a.m. legal access is possible again. So we thought these portals beyond the range of XMP8 Burstern were relatively hard anchors for over 2 checkpoints.
As with the Resistance linkstar builders, Saint Peter, the patron of the Cologne Cathedral, annoyed the agents playing at unholy times and let it rain heavily. But in Ingress operations there is no wrong weather, only the wrong field equipment. In fact, bad weather in field operations is also good weather, as it minimizes the risk of active countermeasures.
Nevertheless, they came. But from an unexpected side. After our experienced operators and cleaners had prepared the link lanes, we awaited eagerly the first link from the western Anchor to the north. But nothing happened. Did we miss anything else somewhere on the Intel map? Doublecheck. No, everything was fine.
However, the Western anchor in the Northern Eifel was set so deeply in the forest that the signal from the cellular base station was much worse in the rainy weather than during fair-weather farming. The scanner simply could not establish a stable connection to the Ingress servers. And this despite the fact that there are few smartphones such as the outdoor model Caterpillar S41 that would have been better suited for such heavy duty use.
After agonizing minutes of waiting, however, it worked out. Link established. Field established. From then on layers were followed by layers. It went like clockwork. The portal clusters further apart in the south required a somewhat longer link break of about 20 minutes because of travelling. This was enough to get the first resistance players on the scene.
Res agents xLadyKara and ButterBirne0815 attacked the portals in the pitch-black Finkens Garden in the north, while our anchor team was still on site. In contrast to the neighbouring forest botanical garden, this site is still accessible at night. In real life we remained undiscovered, but on the Intel we were of course visible. After a short coordination, we decided to abandon the layers, which had already been built, and to continue further outwards according to plan. So we moved on to the next portals near the Rhine.
We thought we had the pursuers on our backs. So we were doubly amazed at what happened then. Our scanner showed attack messages from the portals which are located deeply in the closed forest botanical garden. Not only that. The portals were even captured. The two Resistance agents must have illegally climbed over the fence and were now about to take the 15 peacocks living there for their well-deserved night's rest.
We didn't give in to our nocturnal impulse to report the agents. The two players are young, still very strongly (over)motivated L7 and L8 agents. The principle of juvenile criminal law applies here: Once is considered as none. Twice is twice. We hope their res community has made it clear to them what it means to start crossing those legal and TOS boundaries. It's just a game. Therefore, it is not worth breaking into zoos, amusement parks or similar places illegally.
In any case, our experienced operators had decided against defence and in favour of construction. Despite the demolished inner layers, the field above the rioters became increasingly greener until it arrived on a houseboat on the Rhine. In the end, we did not only achieve the Onyx Illuminator badge for Maximus732 . A partial reconstruction in the north brought platinum and gold into another two agent's profile.
Stoppage time:
The field stood over another checkpoint until 6 o'clock the next morning. Then the north anchor was torn down by res. But only to be rebuilt from there 2 hours later. Another demolition to the next checkpoint was also fended off by coordinated reconstruction in the north and south.
The next attack then did not take place to the next checkpoint at 16:00. No, it was more cleverly timed. It happened at 5:00 p.m. At the same time, the opening game of the German national team at the Soccer World Cup in Russia was kicked off.
After a long trip to the edge of the forest and 20 minutes on foot, a Res agent flipped the West anchor and let the beautiful tree disappear again after 16 hours. Meanwhile, the Enlightened agents were sitting in front of the screens keeping their fingers crossed. Didn't help. Mexico won 2:1 - but at least in green. Just like us Enl players. We didn't just build the Christmas tree. Due to the surprisingly possible reconstruction, the field brought much more MU for the cell rating than expected and held four times longer than we dared to hope.
All that remains for us is to carry over the old football wisdom to Ingress:
Ingress is a simple game: 100 listed agents chase after a cell rating for 175 hours, and in the end the Germans alwas win. Well, obviously not at the soccer field, ab at least in cell NR02-GOLF-15. After the field is before the field.

Vorrunde

Aber was soll denn ein Weihnachtslinkstern ohne Baum darunter? Nett wie wir Enlightened Agenten sind, wollten wir das fehlende Grün nachliefern. Die besten Weihnachtstannen der Region gibt es bekanntlich in der Eifel. Vermutlich wegen der guten Vulkanerde. Also sollte auch das Grün auch aus dieser Ecke heraus aufgebaut werden.
Agent xSOYLENTxGREENx brachte den Stein ins Rollen. Feldbauer doppeIkeks arbeitete den ersten Draw zu einem amtlichen Linkplan aus. Passend zur Lage des Weihnachtsbaums wurden dann die Wichtel...ähh...Agenten aus der Region rekrutiert.
Die Keys wurden in der geographischen Mitte der 3 Ankerbereiche getauscht. Der Ort wurde jedoch nicht nur geographisch ausgesucht, sondern auch kulinarisch. Wir saßen mit leckeren Burgern und Steaks beisammen, während draußen Resistance-Agenten Felder bauten. Wie sollten sie auch ahnen, welche “Werte” die Kapseln enthielten, die kurz hinter ihnen im Scanner aufgetaucht und wieder verschwunden waren.
OP-Day:
Mit moderatem Precleaning war dann alles am Feldbautag vorbereitet. Teile der Anker im Norden lagen mitten im Forstbotanischen Garten Köln-Rodenkirchen. Dieser ist umzäunt und wird um 20 Uhr abends von einem Sicherheitsdienst verschlossen. Erst am Folgetag um 9 Uhr ist wieder legaler Zutritt möglich. Also wähnten wir diese jenseits der Reichweite von XMP8 Burstern liegenden Portale als relativ harte Anker über 2 Checkpoints hinweg.
Wie schon bei den Sternbauern der Resistance ärgerte Petrus, der Schutzpatron des Kölner Doms, die zu unheiligen Zeiten spielenden Agenten und ließ es heftig regnen. Aber bei Ingress-Operationen gibt es ja kein falsches Wetter, sondern nur die falsche Feldausrüstung. Tatsächlich ist schlechtes Wetter im Feldbau auch gutes Wetter, da es das Risiko von aktiver Gegenwehr minimiert.
Die kam dennoch, aber von unerwarteter Seite. Nachdem unsere routinierten Operatoren und Cleaner die Linkkanäle vorbereitet hatten, warteten wir sehnsüchtig auf den ersten Link vom Westanker in den Norden. Der kam und kam nicht. Hatten wir irgendwo auf der Intel-Karte noch etwas übersehen? Nein. Da war alles ok.
Der Westanker in der Nordeifel lag jedoch so tief im Wald, dass bei dem Regenwetter das Mobilfunksignal viel schlechter war als beim Schönwetterfarmen. Der Scanner bekam einfach keine stabile Verbindung zu den Ingress-Servern aufgebaut. Und das, obwohl es wenige Smartphones wie das Outdoor-Modell Caterpillar S41 gibt, die für einen solchen Einsatz besser geeignet gewesen wären.
Nach quälenden Minuten des Wartens klappte es dann aber doch. Link stand. Feld stand. Ab da wurden Layer um Layer erweitert. Es klappte wie am Schnürchen. Die weiter auseinanderliegenden Portalcluster im Süden erforderten eine etwas größere Linkpause von ca. 20 Minuten. Diese reichte, um die ersten Resistance-Player auf den Plan zu rufen.
Die Res-Agenten xLadyKara und ButterBirne0815 griffen im Norden die Portale im stockfinsteren Finkens Garten an, während unser Ankerteam noch vor Ort war. Dieser ist im Gegensatz zum benachbarten Forstbotanischen Garten auch nachts noch zugänglich. Real blieben wir so unentdeckt, aber auf der Intel waren wir natürlich sichtbar. Nach kurzer Abstimmung entschieden wir uns, diese immerhin schon gebauten Layer aufzugeben und uns nach Plan weiter nach außen vorzuarbeiten. Wir zogen also zu den nächsten Portalen in Rheinnähe weiter.
Wir gingen davon aus, die Verfolger im Nacken zu haben. Deshalb staunten wir doppelt über jenes, was dann passierte. Im Scanner tauchten auf einmal Angriffsmeldungen von den Portalen aus dem geschlossenen Forstbotanischen Garten auf. Nicht nur das. Die Portale wurden sogar eingenommen. Die beiden Resistance-Agenten müssen also illegal über den Zaun gestiegen sein und waren nun dabei, die dort wohnenden 15 Pfauen um ihre verdiente Nachtruhe zu bringen.
Unserem nächtlichen Impuls, die Agenten deshalb zu reporten, gaben wir nicht nach. Die beiden sind junge, noch sehr stark (über)motivierte L7 und L8 Agenten. Da gilt das Prinzip aus dem Jugendstrafrecht: Einmal ist keinmal. Zweimal ist zweimal. Wir hoffen, ihre Res-Community hat ihnen klar gemacht, was es bedeutet, wenn man anfängt, nur für ein Spiel solche Grenzen zu überschreiten. Dafür lohnt es sich nicht, illegal in Zoos, Freizeitparks oder ähnliche Orte einzubrechen.
Dazu hatten sich unsere erfahrenen Operatoren ohnehin gegen Verteidigung und für Aufbau entschieden. So wurde trotz der abgerissenen Innenlayer das Feld über den Randalierern immer grüner bis es auf einem Hausboot am Rhein angekommen war. Am Ende stand nicht nur die Onyx Illuminator Badge für Maximus732, sondern ein partieller Wiederaufbau im Norden brachte auch noch einmal Platin und Gold ins Agentenprofil.
Nachspielzeit:
Dann stand das Feld über einen weiteren Checkpoint hinweg bis 6 Uhr am nächsten Morgen. Dann wurde der Nordanker abgerissen. Nur um 2h später wieder von dort aus aufgebaut zu werden. Auch ein weiterer Abriss zum nächsten Checkpoint wurde durch koordinierten Wiederaufbau in Nord und Süd abgewehrt.
Der nächste Angriff erfolgte dann nicht zum nächsten Checkpoint um 16:00 Uhr. Nein, er war cleverer terminiert. Er erfolgte um 17:00 Uhr. Zum gleichen Zeitpunkt war nämlich Anstoßzeit für das Auftaktspiel der deutschen Nationalmannschaft bei der Fußball-Weltmeisterschaft in Russland.
Nach längerer Anfahrt bis zum Waldrand und 20 Minuten Fußmarsch flippte ein Res-Agent den Westanker und ließ so den wunderschönen Baum nach 16 Stunden wieder verschwinden. Die Enlightened Agenten saßen derweil vor den Bildschirmen und drückten die Daumen. Half aber nicht. Mexiko gewann 2:1 - aber immerhin in grün. So wie wir auch. Wir hatten nicht nur den Weihnachtsbaum gebaut. Das Feld brachte durch den überraschend möglichen Wiederaufbau viel mehr MU für die Zellwertung als erwartet und stand auch viermal länger als wir gehofft hatten.
Bleibt uns nur noch der Übertrag der alten Fußballweisheiten auf Ingress:
Ingress ist ein einfaches Spiel: 100 gelistete Agenten jagen 175 Stunden lang einer Zellwertung nach, und am Ende gewinnen die Deutschen. Nun, ganz offensichtlich gilt das nicht für den Fußballplatz, aber zumindest in Zelle NR02-GOLF-15.
