Starburst Dormagen 2018

Operation summary
Type: Starburst with 213 Links
Place: Dormagen, Germany
Time: 06.10.2018, around 19:00 CET

“In October the earth will be moving through a swarm of meteorites left by the comet P21/Giacobini-Zinner. As these meteorites burn up in the atmosphere they will create shooting stars! There is no better moment to let starbursts bloom."  (Scientific background: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gVHU8K4enPg )

Agent and #Ingress vanguard +Claudi Ja contacted the Enlightened communities with the idea to celebrate the Draconiden meteorits shower. This proposal resonated in many #Ingress communities. Wordwide over 100 green stars lit up our world (global sitrep: https://plus.google.com/+ClaudiJa/posts/E8DHtuHGpdj ) . In combination with the stardust of the meteor, which our planet was crossing, they produced  an exceptionally enormous amount XM that surely helped mankind to evolve further to a higher level.

But this sitrep is not a general one. It’s about the special starburst in Dormagen, Germany.  It wasn’t the biggest and largest starburst on this day. But size doesn’t matter. It’s about being part of a large family that makes beautiful things happen.

First we had to choose the right location. Should the center of our star be a hard to reach, faction exklusive portal or a common portal with easy access to our farmers and the other faction? We decided to go for the public option since shooting stars are meant to light up and vanish after a short time.

We chose “Kreiskrankenhaus Dormagen”/”Dormagen Hospital” as our portal. Stealth farming was easy. Since a hospital is often visited by several agents who spend some time there, we could equip it with hackmods without making the other faction too suspicious.

Before the operation startet we had to cope with our first leak. But fortunately it wasn’t the type of leak where intel falls into the wrong hands. It was a literal leak of the aquarium at the apartment of the neighbour of our agent +Daniel Bracht. 500l of water spilled through the room and the poor fishes were in danger to suffocate. So we decided to start without him. Ingress goals are important, but surely not a matter of life and death (sorry, hardcore-storyline nerds ;-).

Equipped with a lot of keys and blessed with beautiful weather our agents spread out through the city and the wide area around it. While the starburst in the nearby city of Cologne was rather compact, we covered an area of 17km diameter. Blue fields and links came down. Green links went up, up and up. The star grew and within an hour we had a beautiful starburst with almost 200 links going to the center portal.

But we still haven't met our internal goal of 200 links when the Resistance turned up. Right at the center portal of our star. A single agent with a strong determination. She didn’t simply wanted to flip the portal though inoculation time was over. She wanted to take it down in a honest battle. And well, she was good and had one big advantage over us: she was on site. Since we were a little low on field agents we decided not to leave any portal guardian behind. No risk, no fun.

Although a lot of our linkers switched to recharging she managed to take out one resonator after another. She had to use up a vast amout of XMP and powercubes, but at least the portal with around 195 links went down to 3 remaining resonators.

Our team captain +Alexander Ritter was about 15km away from the centre when the attack started. He turned around his car and rushed back to the hospital. We really thought that he couldn’t make it back in time in order to redeploy resonators and shields on the portal. And then 2 minutes before our enlightened agents arrived the unevitable moment arrive…

Did I write unevitable? Well, I meant unexpectable ;-) The Res agent realized that the last resonators would be too hard to take down as a single agent - and she stopped his attack. The leaving and arriving agents met on the parking lot.

The portal’s infrastructure got reinstated and our link frenzy could continue. The saviour of the aquarium has meanwhile joined the troops. His good doing earned him so many karma points that it was his privilege to throw link no 200.

In the end we built 213 links. And while our linking just came to an end just the two stars neighbouring stars of Leverkusen and Düsseldorf just began to rise. For a short time all the three of them shone over the river rhine. Our star in Dormagen was larger than the prior one in Cologne. And when Resistance thought this might be the end in our region, the star in Leverkusen grew 4 times bigger than ours.

Hell yeah, that's how you ramp coordinated operations!

Then the Resistance got some backup and with three agents they took down the portal. But this was rather easy since most of our agents were already dismissed of our operation. They enjoyed our victory with some cool beverages in a late summer night.

But the Res agent 4rticFox, who was the first attacker of the portal, proved herself to be a fair player. She wrote us, that we made her pay a rather high price while noting that we pulled this off very well. In the end it was a fun night for both factions. That's how good games have to be: giving quality time for every participant. Sometimes you win, sometimes you learn.

enlighten the world.
create things.
go out and play.
